HOW TO READ A MEETING SCHEDULE:

When looking at a meeting schedule each meeting will list the type of meeting, the format and other specializations in some instances.

There are 2 types of Alcoholics Anonymous meetings:

  • OPEN meetings are available to anyone interested in the Alcoholics Anonymous program of recovery from alcoholism.
  • CLOSED meetings are for AA members ONLY, or those who have a problem with alcohol and “have a desire to stop drinking.”

Formats can be the same every meeting or change based on the day or week of the month. Some common formats are:

  • Open Discussion
  • Speaker
  • Beginner
  • Step/Tradition/Book Study

Specialized Meetings can be for different populations (ex: men only, women only, Spanish speaking or LGBTQIA+ friendly) or list a special environment (ex: candlelight or campfire meetings) so attendees are prepared.
